El-Fayoum, 100 km south-west of Cairo, is a wonderful area and is the largest oasis in Egypt. It has also been called the garden of Egypt. It is an agriculture centre, well known for its fruits, vegetables, chickens and cotton

Most of the people are still poor in this area, and the way of living is also primitive.

In the north of the oasis there is a big salt water lake, called the lake of Qarun.

In the past the oasis was filled by this lake, but later a series of canals were built linking the lake to the Nile. People say that in that time the lake was also filled with crocodiles. But, fortunately, nowadays you don't find crocodiles any more in the lake.

Two million people live in this big area of El-Fayoum.

As far as the people knew there wasn't a centre for children with learning difficulties but with the opening of the centre this has changed.
